Hi, I’m Hanna, a passionate biologist 🙂 . I am from Germany and grew up in the Northwest of the country. I have always loved animals, big and small, no legs and many legs and everything in between.
So, biology studies were set in stone very early on, always with marine biology as a focus. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Bremen, and a Master’s degree from the University of Oldenburg. For my Master’s thesis, I worked on a project at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research: I analyzed behavioural reactions of fin and humpback whales to a research vessel on its way to Antarctica, recorded with a thermal imaging device. During my studies, I participated in research projects in Iceland and Australia (both amazing countries – and there are definitely more whales there than in Germany). Since completing my master’s degree, I have mainly worked in eco-tourism. I first went back to Iceland and worked as a guide on whale-watching tours in different parts of the country. A couple of years later, I joined the expedition cruise industry. On different vessels, I have worked as an expedition guide, marine biologist lecturer, citizen science coordinator, and expedition coordinator – a little bit of everything.

Da war das Biologiestudium schon sehr früh in Stein gemeißelt, immer mit Meeresbiologie als Schwerpunkt. Ich habe einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Biologie von der Universität Bremen und einen Master-Abschluss von der Universität Oldenburg. Für meine Masterarbeit habe ich an einem Projekt am Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung gearbeitet: Ich habe Verhaltensreaktionen von Finn- und Buckelwalen auf ein Forschungsschiff (die gute alte Polarstern) auf dem Weg in die Antarktis analysiert, aufgezeichnet mit einem Wärmebildgerät. Während meines Studiums habe ich an Forschungsprojekten in Island und Australien teilgenommen (beides tolle Länder – und dort gibt es definitiv mehr Wale als in Deutschland). Seit Abschluss meines Masterstudiums arbeite ich hauptsächlich im Ökotourismus. Ich ging zunächst zurück nach Island und arbeitete als Guide auf Walbeobachtungstouren in verschiedenen Teilen des Landes. Ein paar Jahre später stieg ich in die Expeditionskreuzfahrtbranche ein. Auf verschiedenen Schiffen habe ich als Expeditionsguide, Dozentin für Meeresbiologie, Citizen Science-Koordinatorin und Expeditionskoordinatorin gearbeitet – ein bisschen von allem.
