Stay curious — even when it gets smelly: Cetacean Necropsy Workshop // Autopsie-Workshop für Delfine

I recently took part in a Cetacean Necropsy Workshop at Vasco da Gama University School in Coimbra, Portugal — and it was intense in all the best ways.🐬🧪

Day one was packed with insights: causes of strandings, infectious diseases, pathology, and protocols for postmortem sampling. Then came day two — the real hands-on work.

Scalpel in hand, we examined three common dolphins, learning firsthand what necropsies can reveal about the threats facing these marine mammals. From tissue analysis to signs of human impact, each cut told a story.

It was messy. It was smelly. It was important.

Understanding what kills cetaceans is key to protecting them. Science like this isn’t always glamorous — but it’s vital.

Ich habe kürzlich an einem Wal-Sekropsie-Workshop an der Vasco da Gama Universität in Coimbra, Portugal, teilgenommen – und es war durch und durch intensiv. 🐬🧪

Der erste Tag war voller Erkenntnisse: Ursachen von Strandungen, Infektionskrankheiten, Pathologie und Protokolle für die Obduktion. Dann kam der zweite Tag – die echte Praxis.

Mit dem Skalpell in der Hand untersuchten wir drei Gewöhnlicher Delfin und erfuhren aus erster Hand, was Sektionen über die Bedrohungen dieser Meeressäuger verraten können. Von der Gewebeanalyse bis hin zu Anzeichen menschlichen Einflusses – jeder Schnitt erzählte eine Geschichte.

Es war schmutzig. Es stank. Es war wichtig.

Zu verstehen, was Wale tötet, ist der Schlüssel zu ihrem Schutz. Wissenschaft wie diese ist nicht immer glamourös – aber sie ist lebenswichtig.
