2026 Polar Field Staff Conference
EN: Last week I had the privilege of attending the 2026 Polar Field Staff Conference, organised by the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators in association with the Polar Tourism Guides Association.
Over four days, we dived deep into topics that sit at the heart of what we do: communication skills, situational awareness, near-miss and incident learning, guiding techniques, and how we as an industry can keep raising the bar on safe, responsible field operations in the polar regions.
But beyond the sessions and workshops, what really made this conference special was the people. Meeting so many passionate, like-minded professionals from across the expedition industry reminded me why I love being part of this community. The conversations in the hallways, over dinner, and during the networking evenings were every bit as valuable as the formal programme.
A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible: the organising teams at AECO and IAATO, the speakers who shared their expertise so generously, and every single participant whose enthusiasm and openness made it such a rich experience.
Already looking forward to carrying these learnings into the next season. And to crossing paths again with so many wonderful people out there in the polar wilderness! 🐧❄️
DE: Letzte Woche hatte ich das Privileg, an der Polar Field Staff Conference 2026 teilzunehmen, die von der Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) und der International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Polar Tourism Guides Association (PTGA) organisiert wurde.
Vier Tage lang befassten wir uns intensiv mit Themen, die für unsere Arbeit zentral sind: Kommunikationsfähigkeiten, Situationsbewusstsein, das Lernen aus Beinaheunfällen und Zwischenfällen, Führungstechniken und wie wir als Branche die Standards für sichere und verantwortungsvolle Feldarbeit in den Polarregionen kontinuierlich verbessern können.
Doch neben den Vorträgen und Workshops waren es vor allem die Menschen, die diese Konferenz so besonders machten. Die Begegnung mit so vielen engagierten und gleichgesinnten Fachleuten aus der gesamten Expeditionsbranche erinnerte mich daran, warum ich so gerne Teil dieser Gemeinschaft bin. Die Gespräche auf den Fluren, beim Abendessen und an den Networking-Abenden waren genauso wertvoll wie das offizielle Programm.
Ein herzliches Dankeschön an alle, die diese Veranstaltung ermöglicht haben: die Organisationsteams von AECO und IAATO, die Referenten, die ihr Fachwissen so großzügig mit uns geteilt haben, und jeden einzelnen Teilnehmer, dessen Begeisterung und Offenheit die Konferenz zu einem so bereichernden Erlebnis gemacht haben.
Ich freue mich schon jetzt darauf, diese Erfahrungen in die nächste Saison mitzunehmen. Und darauf, so vielen wunderbaren Menschen da draußen in der Polarwildnis wieder zu begegnen! 🐧❄️
