Whaling in Iceland – 11 years later // Walfang in Island – 11 Jahre später
EN: In 2015, I was working as a biologist and whale watching guide in Iceland. One afternoon, out on Faxaflói near Reykjavík, I was scanning the water for humpbacks, minkes, and white-beaked dolphins. Instead, what came into view were two dead fin whales, roped to the side of a whaling vessel heading for the processing station.
I was overwhelmed. A former Greenpeace activist who happened to be a passenger on my tour took the shot below and sent it to news outlets.
That was 11 years ago.
I was recently back in Iceland. And that same whaling vessel is sitting in dry dock, being patched up for another season.
Whaling is not the single biggest threat to whales globally. Ship strikes and bycatch kill far more individuals every year. But this one is solvable almost immediately.
So here’s my ask:
🐋 To the Icelandic government: end fin whaling, once and for all. Thank you to everyone in Iceland already speaking out.
🍽️ To anyone visiting Iceland, Norway, or Japan: please don’t order whale meat. It matters.
🐦 And while we’re at it: the same goes for puffin. They are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, their numbers are falling. Don’t eat them either.
In 2026, this should no longer require debate.
DE: 2015 arbeitete ich als Biologin und Walbeobachtungsführerin in Island. Eines Nachmittags, draußen auf Faxaflói nahe Reykjavík, suchte ich nach Buckelwalen, Zwergwalen und Weißschnabeldelfinen. Stattdessen entdeckte ich zwei tote Finnwale, die an der Seite eines Walfangschiffs festgebunden waren, das Kurs auf die Verarbeitungsstation nahm.
Ich war fassungslos. Ein ehemaliger Greenpeace-Aktivist, der zufällig auf meiner Tour war, machte das Foto und schickte es an verschiedene Medien.
Das ist elf Jahre her.
Vor Kurzem war ich wieder in Island. Und dasselbe Walfangschiff liegt im Trockendock und wird für die nächste Saison bereit gemacht.
Der Walfang ist zwar nicht die größte Bedrohung für Wale weltweit. Schiffskollisionen und Beifang fordern jedes Jahr weitaus mehr Todesopfer. Doch dieses Problem ließe sich fast sofort lösen.
Hier also meine Bitte:
🐋 An die isländische Regierung: Beendet den Walfang mit dem Finnwal ein für alle Mal. Vielen Dank an alle in Island, die sich bereits dafür einsetzen.
🍽️ An alle, die Island, Norwegen oder Japan besuchen möchten: Bitte bestellt kein Walfleisch. Es macht einen Unterschied.
🐦 Und wo wir gerade dabei sind: Dasselbe gilt für Papageientaucher. Sie gelten laut IUCN als gefährdet, ihre Bestände gehen zurück. Esst auch sie nicht.
Im Jahr 2026 sollte dies keine Diskussion mehr erfordern.
